Linkou Market

The project site is located on Linkou Old Street, formerly known as the “Tin Roof Market.” This renovation poses a unique challenge due to the site’s irregular layout, including disorganized motorcycle parking and the presence of a majestic, century-old tree that holds deep historical and emotional value for the local community.

To honor the site’s heritage and preserve its cultural memory, the new market entrance is strategically placed at the location of the original entrance, maintaining a sense of continuity and familiarity for longtime residents. The design embraces the existing hundred-year-old tree, placing key community functions such as the market, daycare center, reading room, and activity spaces around it. This creates a powerful spatial and emotional anchor, allowing people to relive memories of visiting the old market beneath the tree’s canopy.

Modern upgrades such as escalators, eco-friendly air conditioning systems, natural ventilation, and ample daylighting are integrated to transform the space from what was once a dark, damp, and outdated environment into a vibrant, inviting public space. The building’s architecture also incorporates greenery and natural elements, offering a refreshing and relaxed atmosphere for shopping, gathering, and community interaction.

Residents can now enjoy a more comfortable and accessible market experience, strolling through the site, socializing, and creating new memories—all while remaining connected to the cherished legacy of the old tree and traditional marketplace.
