National Taiwan University Hospital has planned the construction of an Organ Donor Memorial Wall to honor the generosity and compassion of organ donors throughout the years. After careful consideration of various locations within the hospital, the Jingfu Passage, which connects the new and old hospital buildings, was chosen as the site. This space is imbued with symbolic meaning, emphasized through an existing glazed artwork by artist Kun-Chuan Shen, who is himself a recipient of an organ donation. His piece became a central inspiration for the design of the memorial wall.
While observing this glazed artwork in person, we were struck by its unique visual effects: the way light reflects and refracts through the glass creates an ethereal, almost spiritual atmosphere. These shimmering patterns seem to float within the space, evoking the feeling of gazing into a star-filled sky. The environment is transformed into “a single artwork, a sky full of stars,” symbolizing the multitude of life journeys touched by organ donation.
Inspired by this experience, we envisioned a memorial space that captures the same sense of awe and reverence, like standing beneath a starlit sky. Each “star” represents the enduring love and selflessness of an organ donor, shining gently and eternally, watching over future generations. The fluid architectural form defines the edges of the space with a soft, porous boundary, creating a natural pause. It invites visitors to stop, reflect, and pay tribute to the profound gift of life offered by these generous donors.
