Taoyuan Public Library Longgang Branch

The Inspiration from the Old Tree and the Environment
This project takes root in an exceptional site, surrounded by lush greenery that forms a natural green tunnel. The design embraces this unique setting, using the surrounding environment and contextual circulation patterns as the foundation for the building’s spatial structure.

“A Book, A Universe”
The architectural concept is inspired by the image of a book opening to reveal an entire universe. The south façade is designed with a series of vertical shading devices, evoking the image of a bookshelf lined with books. While the east, west, and south elevations are composed of more compact and controlled openings, the north façade is fully glazed, opening up to the surrounding green space. This symbolizes how the world of knowledge lies hidden within the pages of a book, waiting to be discovered.

“Read by Everyone, Read Anywhere”
The building is designed to be inclusive and adaptable, offering spaces where everyone can find their own reading corner. The entrance lobby includes a welcoming area for newspapers and universally accessible reading materials. A spacious reading lobby serves as a transition zone, accommodating many visitors while buffering external noise. The second floor houses periodicals and a children’s reading area, thoughtfully arranged to prioritize convenience and safety. The third floor is home to the main library collections and a comfortable, relaxed reading zone. On the fourth floor, a quiet, self-study area is bathed in natural light from a central skylight, offering a peaceful space for reflection and focus.

By integrating natural elements, symbolic design, and user-centered spatial planning, the project becomes more than just a library—it is a place of discovery, inclusion, and harmony with its environment.
